  • 1 pound chipped ham thinly sliced deli ham
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sweet pickle relish
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke optional but recommended
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 6 hamburger buns

Method
 

  1. In a large saucepan, combine ketchup, water, sweet pickle relish, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce.
  2. Season the sauce with liquid smoke (if using), cinnamon, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  3. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally.
  4. Allow the sauce to simmer for about 20 minutes to let the flavors meld together.
  5. Add the chipped ham to the sauce, stirring gently to ensure all pieces are coated.
  6. Continue to heat for an additional 5 minutes, until the ham is heated through.
  7. Lightly toast the hamburger buns if desired.
  8. Using tongs or a slotted spoon, pile the saucy chipped ham onto the bottom halves of the buns.
  9. Top with the remaining bun halves and serve immediately.
