Ingredients
  

  • cups brown sugar packed
  • cups ketchup
  • ½ cup red wine vinegar
  • ½ cup water
  • tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon prepared yellow mustard
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper adjust to taste
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons liquid smoke optional, for extra smoky flavor

Method
 

  1. Gather all ingredients and measure them out before beginning.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the brown sugar, ketchup, red wine vinegar, and water. Stir well to combine.
  3. Add the Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, paprika, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and onion powder.
  4. If using, add the liquid smoke for an extra dimension of smokiness.
  5. Whisk all ingredients together until thoroughly combined.
  6. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring frequently to prevent scorching.
  7. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce thickens slightly.
  8. Remove from heat and allow to cool. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
  9. Taste and adjust seasonings if needed. Add more brown sugar for sweetness, vinegar for tanginess, or cayenne for heat.
