- Gather all ingredients and measure them out before beginning.

- If using, add the liquid smoke for an extra dimension of smokiness.
- Whisk all ingredients together until thoroughly combined.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring frequently to prevent scorching.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
- Taste and adjust seasonings if needed. Add more brown sugar for sweetness, vinegar for tanginess, or cayenne for heat.
