Method
- Gather all your ingredients and measure them out before starting.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the ketchup, honey, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Stir until well combined.
- Add the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, liquid smoke (if using), and cayenne pepper. Stir well to incorporate all spices.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat. Be careful as it may spatter slightly.
- Reduce heat to low and let simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent scorching on the bottom.
- The sauce should thicken slightly and develop a deeper, more complex flavor as it simmers.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
- Transfer to a glass jar or airtight container once cooled.
