Method
- Gather all your ingredients and measure them out before starting.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the ketchup, honey, and brown sugar. Whisk together until well mixed.
- Add the apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and lemon juice. Stir to incorporate.
- Mix in the garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
- If using liquid smoke, add it now for that authentic BBQ flavor.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
- Transfer to a glass jar or airtight container once completely cooled.
