Ingredients

  • 2 pounds chicken pieces thighs and drumsticks work best
  • 1.5 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Method

  1. Preheat your outdoor grill for medium-high heat (around 375-400°F) and lightly oil the grate to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the chicken by patting it dry with paper towels. Brush with olive oil and season lightly with salt and pepper.
  3. In a small saucepan, combine ketchup, honey, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, smoked paprika, onion powder, and black pepper.
  4. Bring the sauce mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring frequently. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and set aside.
  5. Place the chicken on the preheated grill, skin side down first if using skin-on pieces. Grill for about 5-7 minutes per side.
  6. Once the chicken has cooked for about 15 minutes total, begin brushing with the BBQ sauce. Apply the sauce generously, turning and basting every few minutes.
  7. Continue grilling until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F and the sauce has caramelized, about 5-10 more minutes. Be careful not to burn the sauce - if needed, move chicken to a cooler part of the grill.
  8. Remove from grill and let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving. This allows the juices to redistribute and the flavors to settle.
  9. Serve with additional warm BBQ sauce on the side for dipping.
