Ingredients

  • 4 whole skin-on bone-in chicken breasts
  • 1 cup of your favorite BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar optional, for extra caramelization
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika smoked paprika adds extra flavor
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional, for heat

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper for easier cleanup.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, pepper, and cayenne (if using).
  3. Pat the chicken breasts dry with paper towels. This helps the seasoning stick better and promotes crispier skin.
  4. Drizzle the chicken breasts with olive oil and rub to coat evenly.
  5. Sprinkle the spice mixture over the chicken breasts, making sure to season under the skin for maximum flavor.
  6. Place the chicken breasts skin-side up on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each piece.
  7. Bake for 25 minutes to allow the chicken to start cooking and the skin to begin crisping up.
  8. After 25 minutes, remove the chicken from the oven and brush generously with BBQ sauce. If using brown sugar, mix it with the BBQ sauce before brushing.
  9. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) and the BBQ sauce has caramelized.
  10. For extra sticky, caramelized BBQ coating, brush with another layer of BBQ sauce during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
  11. Once done, remove from oven and let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow juices to redistribute.
  12. Serve hot with extra BBQ sauce on the side if desired.
