  • 4 bone-in skin-on chicken breasts (about 3 pounds total)
  • 1 cup high-quality BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika smoked paprika adds extra flavor
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional, for heat

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  2. Pat the chicken breasts dry with paper towels. This helps the seasonings stick and promotes better browning.
  3. In a small bowl, mix olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, pepper, and cayenne (if using).
  4. Rub the spice mixture all over the chicken breasts, getting under the skin where possible for maximum flavor.
  5. Place the seasoned chicken breasts on the prepared baking sheet, skin side up, leaving space between each piece.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
  7. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix the BBQ sauce with brown sugar until well combined.
  8. After the initial 25 minutes, remove the chicken from the oven and generously brush each piece with the BBQ sauce mixture.
  9. Return to the oven and bake for another 15 minutes.
  10. Apply a second coat of BBQ sauce and bake for a final 5-10 minutes, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) and the sauce is caramelized.
  11. Allow the chicken to rest for 5 minutes before serving to help retain juices.
