Ingredients

  • 1 3 pound boneless chuck roast
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 ½ cups high-quality bottled barbecue sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce optional
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar optional

Method

  1. Trim excess fat from the chuck roast. While some fat adds flavor, removing larger pieces will result in a less greasy final dish.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Rub this seasoning mixture all over the roast, ensuring every side is well coated.
  3. Place the seasoned chuck roast in the bottom of your slow cooker.
  4. Pour the barbecue sauce over the meat. If using, add the Worcestershire sauce and brown sugar at this time.
  5. Cover and cook on LOW for 7-8 hours or on HIGH for 4-5 hours, until the beef is extremely tender and easily pulls apart with a fork.
  6. About 30 minutes before serving, use two forks to shred the beef directly in the slow cooker. Mix well with the sauce and continue cooking uncovered for 20-30 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken and the flavors to meld.
  7. Serve hot on sandwich buns or alongside your favorite sides.
