Ingredients

  • 4 skinless boneless chicken breast halves (about 2 pounds)
  • 1 cup bottled barbecue sauce your favorite brand
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional, for heat
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Method

  1. Place chicken breast halves in the bottom of your slow cooker, arranging them in a single layer if possible.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together barbecue sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, minced garlic, red pepper flakes (if using), Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  3. Pour the sauce mixture evenly over the chicken, making sure all pieces are coated.
  4. Cover and cook on LOW for 6-7 hours or HIGH for 3-4 hours, until chicken is very tender and easily shreds with a fork.
  5. About 30 minutes before serving, remove chicken from the slow cooker and shred using two forks.
  6. Return shredded chicken to the slow cooker, stir to coat with sauce, and continue cooking on LOW for another 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
