Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium onion finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 14 ounce bottle ketchup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons prepared yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 12 hamburger buns for serving (optional)

Method

  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon until no longer pink, about 7-8 minutes. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  2. Add the diced onion to the beef and cook until translucent, about 3 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. In a large saucepan, whisk together ketchup, water, white sugar, brown sugar, vinegar, mustard, salt, pepper, and paprika.
  4. Bring the sauce mixture to a simmer over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low.
  5. Add the cooked ground beef mixture to the sauce and stir to combine thoroughly.
  6. Allow the BBQ beef to simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and flavors have melded together.
  7. Taste and adjust seasonings if needed.
  8. Serve hot on hamburger buns for sandwiches or as desired.
