Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 14 ounce bottle ketchup
  • ¼ cup water
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 8 hamburger buns lightly toasted
  • Pickles and coleslaw for serving optional

Method

  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it up with a wooden spoon until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add the diced onion to the beef and cook until translucent, about 3 minutes. Add garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. In the same pan, add ketchup, water, white sugar, brown sugar, vinegar, mustard, salt, pepper, and paprika. Whisk everything together until well combined.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and flavors meld together.
  5. Taste and adjust seasonings if needed, adding more sugar for sweetness or vinegar for tanginess.
  6. Serve the BBQ beef generously piled on toasted hamburger buns. Top with pickles and coleslaw if desired.
