Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef 80/20 for best flavor
  • 1 medium onion finely diced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Optional toppings: pickles coleslaw, additional BBQ sauce

Method

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and diced onion.
  2. Cook until beef is browned and crumbly and onion is translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Break up any large chunks with a wooden spoon.
  3. Drain excess grease from the pan, leaving just enough to keep the meat moist.
  4. Reduce heat to medium-low. Add ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and smoked paprika to the skillet.
  5. Stir well to combine all ingredients with the meat mixture.
  6. Simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens and flavors meld together.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Toast hamburger buns lightly if desired.
  9. Spoon the BBQ hamburger mixture onto the bottom buns, add your favorite toppings, and cover with top buns.
  10. Serve immediately while hot.
