- Gather all your bbq sauce ingredients and measure them out before starting.
- In a medium saucepan, combine brown sugar, ketchup, red wine vinegar, and water. Stir over medium heat until the sugar begins to dissolve.
- Add the Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, paprika, salt, and black pepper to the saucepan. Whisk thoroughly to combine.
- Mix in the minced garlic and cayenne pepper (if using).
- Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently to prevent sticking.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Remove from heat and let cool. The sauce will thicken slightly as it cools.
